English/Nat The U.S. ambassador's family was among Americans air lifted out of Burundi today (Wednesday) amidst fears sparked by increasing ethnic violence. While recent fighting has claimed dozens of lives, U.S. Ambassador Robert Kruger, says he doesn't expect Burundi to descend into the kind of ethnic unrest seen in neighbouring Rwanda last year. These Americans are the second group of expatriates to flee Burundi - yesterday 155 French nationals pulled out. Washington has strongly advised its nationals to leave the central African republic which has been racked by ethnic violence. The bloodletting began March 19 when gunmen suspected of being Hutus killed three Belgians, including a 4-year-old child, and four Burundians in a highway ambush outside the capital. Among those leaving on Wednesday were the ambassador's pregnant wife Kathleen Kruger and her two children, Marianna and Sarah. SOUNDBITE: "When the Belgian family was killed I think it sent shock waves throughout the European and American community. But fortunately my family and I have never been directly threatened. The grenades, the machine gun fire - those were always sounds in the distance, and I guess it's a good thing we're getting away now while those are still distant sounds and the attacks are not against us. SUPER CAPTION: Kathleen Kruger, US Ambassador's wife The ambassador will stay in Burundi. Today he came to the airport to see his family off. Although he says violence is on the increase he doesn't feel threatened and he doesn't expect Burundi to have an ethnic massacre on the scale of Rwanda last year - more than 500-thousand people were killed. SOUNDBITE: "I don't feel personally endangered. There is violence always in Burundi in a higher degree than what we're accustomed to at home. That violence has, I think, increased some recently and it's been harder to find any degree of control between the government and the security forces itself of the situation." SUPER CAPTION: Robert Kruger, US Ambassador SOUNDBITE: "Human being is human being. So they are afraid perhaps there will be some troubles..... it is only human feelings. But me, who is living in Burundi for many years, I know Burundi. I can tell you and I can assure you there will be peace, not war." SUPER CAPTION: Cypien Mbonigaba, Economic adviser to Burundi's prime minister As yesterday, people are taking more than the bare essentials with them. Scores of Belgians are also on the Sabena flight to Brussels. Officially they are taking an early Easter holiday, but it looks like an evacuation, SOUNDBITE: "The Belgians are advised to go on holidays, just for Easter holidays, the wives and the children. We've advised them, so they come back two weeks from now. Because the schools will be open again if all goes well." SUPER CAPTION: Maaike van Craen, Belgian Ambassador's wife SOUNDBITE: "Anytime I can go home, I'm happy. Anytime I can go home... At government expense? I'm happy!" SUPER CAPTION: Bob Griffin, American dependent Some were glad to go, others were not. Many don't know if they will return. LEAD IN: After some of the worst violence in Kenyan history, tourists are scarce, people are frightened and the economy is suffering. There is hope after a peace deal between the country's politically opposed leaders, but one serious challenge remains: how does Kenya's tourist industry recover? STORYLINE: The animals of the Nairobi National Park may enjoy wandering the plains free from the noise and pollution of tourists and visitors but the silence belies a major economic concern. Kenya is the transit point for a quarter of the gross domestic product of Uganda and Rwanda, and one-third of Burundi's, according to the World Bank.
